Job Description
Avata Partners is seeking an experienced Litigation Paralegal located in Los Angeles (Century City) . This position is to work with and support multiple attorneys and staff members in all matters of litigation including environmental litigation, asbestos litigation, employment litigation, financial services, insurance litigation, municipal/public entity litigation, real estate, and construction matters. This role is ideal an for an experienced litigation paralegal who enjoys working in a busy regional and national firm in a collaborative and collegial environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform legal and nonlegal research
- Draft pleadings, motions, discovery, subpoenas, emails briefs, memoranda, and other written correspondence on behalf of attorneys
- Assist with all aspects of the discovery phase including preparing discovery requests, discovery objections, and responses, issuing subpoenas, and coordinating depositions
- Assist attorneys with deposition preparation including preparing witness question outlines and compiling the necessary exhibits to be offered during deposition
- Summarize, analyze and prepare depositions, documents, medical records, discovery responses, and deposition transcripts, attending depositions when needed
- Assist with pre-trial preparation in the gathering, review, analysis, and production of documents, including trial documents, medical records and letters of claim, exhibit preparation, trial and exhibit notebooks, preparing direct and cross examinations, and coordinating the necessary travel arrangements and various resource needs for trial
- Communicate effectively with clients, opposing counsel, opposing party, vendors and/or other third parties
- Manage voluminous document production for complex litigation matters
- Manage case management database and web-based document repository for e-discovery productions
- Review, tag, and produce document productions, downloading or uploading documents to various databases as required
- Accurately enter time and expense records into InTapp Time; prepare expense memoranda and documentation for accounting purposes
- Coordinate client billing matters, prepare billing letters, and requested client financial updates
- Prepare redactions and privilege logs
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: Skills and Abilities
- High proficiency in court rules, discovery rules and trial procedures (California, Appellate, and Federal)
- Advanced understanding of law and motion calendaring, trial calendaring procedures and deadlines
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage large quantities of information
- Ability to work well under the pressures of strict deadlines, prioritize assignments, and move between tasks efficiently and quickly
- Ability work both collaboratively as part of a team and independently or unsupervised
- Excellent spelling, grammar, and proofreading skills with a strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize; ability to manage time sensitive documents and other information with confidentiality and discretion
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an aptitude to interface with attorneys, clients, staff, and firm visitors
- Experience with Adobe and Kofax PDF, and document comparison and formatting software such as Litera and Forte
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, suite of products, including but not limited to Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Styles. Knowledge of NetDocuments (NetDocs) a plus
- Familiarity of toxic tort, mass tort and/or asbestos litigation rules and procedures
- Flexibility to work overtime outside of normal scheduled hours
QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience
- High school diploma (or equivalent) required, associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
- Paralegal certification from an ABA accredited program, notary certification a plus
- 5+ years of paralegal experience in a litigation practice required, and in compliance with California Business & Professions Code Section 6450
- Experience in litigation practices that include toxic tort, environmental health, or high value personal injury caseloads preferred, but not required
Salary Range: $85,000-$110,000 per year, commensurate with experience
